Hi,
no own experience. It is a North American plant, therefore not included in European books about edible wild plants (but in similar american books).

If you look at Wiki (en) and different pages in English language : edible (spicy like peppermint), infusions, traditional medical use by Native Americans.
But the fruits and leaves contain a substance closely related to aspirin, so an "overdose" may have side effects. An essential oil made from the leaves can be deadly poisonous if ingested in large quantities.

Smashed a leaf and smelled it, strong smell, not very appealing. I know the smell but can't attach name to it....
